The faculty and staff of the Department of Horticulture at the University of Georgia cordially invite you to attend their biennial Open House and tour of the research plots and ornamental plant evaluations. The tour begins at the UGA Horticulture Farm in Watkinsville, where Dr. Michael Dirr will discuss his woody plant improvement program and some of the new woody trees and shrubs he is evaluating, including dwarf crape myrtles, hydrangea paniculatas and rare conifers.
Dr. Tim Smalley will discuss his research on poultry litter soil amendment, vermicompost top-dressing and chipped wood mulch. Dr. John Ruter (Tifton Campus) will show you some of the outstanding plants from his Coastal Plain plant evaluation program, including two purple-leaf ornamental grasses that are sure to make a dramatic statement in the landscape. Dr. Carol Robacker (Griffin Campus) will show you some exciting new abelia cultivars from her breeding program. Next, Dr. Marc van Iersel will discuss his research on efficient irrigation systems and will demonstrate an irrigation controller that applies water according to plant needs. Finally, Dr. Gary Wade will show you a number of cold-hardy plants he is evaluating for their adaptability to hardiness zone 7.
In addition to the stops at the farm, you'll be transported to the UGA main campus where Allan Armitage will walk you through the annual and perennial trial gardens. You'll want to make notes on which plants are still performing in the late summer landscape.
Registration opens at 8 a.m., and the tour starts promptly at 9 a.m., rain or shine, at the Horticulture Farm off Highway 441 just north of Watkinsville. Directions to the farm are below, after the registration form.
