The Vidalia Onion Field Day is scheduled for March 27, 2003, from 12 noon until 3 p.m. at the Vidalia Onion and Vegetable Research Center at Lyons, Georgia. This field day will begin with a sponsored lunch followed by visits to the field plots. This field day will highlight work on Vidalia onions that includes weed control, disease suppression, insect control, new cultural practices, fertility and onion storage. This is a great opportunity for extension personnel and growers involved with onions to come and see the latest research. Please encourage your growers and other interested parties to come and visit. For more information or directions, please call me (see above) or Randy Hill, farm superintendent, at 912-565-7822.

Georgia Organics is sponsoring an introductory workshop on organic production. Alex McGregor of Walden Farm, Signal Mountain, Tennessee, will be conducting the workshop. Mr. McGregor has many years of experience as an organic farmer.
This workshop will be an overview of the fundamentals of organic production. The emphasis will be on establishing a new farm and the problems associated with transitioning from conventional to organic production. This should be a great opportunity to increase your skill set in this area. Please encourage interested growers to participate.
The workshop will be held Sunday, April 27, 2003, at Camp John Hope in Fort Valley, Georgia. For more information, contact Mary Anne Woodie of Georgia Organics at mawoodie@mindspring.com

Well, I guess the drought is about over based on the amount of rain we've had, with 3.36 inches of rain in Vidalia and 4.45 inches in Statesboro over the past week. Onions had come through the cold weather remarkably untouched, but all this rain has set them up for severe disease problems while preventing growers from getting into the fields to spray.
Don't forget our field day next week; see you next month.
Regards,
George Boyhan, Ph.D.
