Ronnie Silcox, Extension Animal Scientist

What is NAIS? Who is developing it? Why?

The National Animal Identification System is a national program intended to identify the animals listed on the form below and record their movements throughout their lives. It is being developed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and state agencies — in cooperation with industry — to enable 48-hour traceback of the movements of any diseased or exposed animal. This will help ensure rapid disease containment and maximum protection of livestock in the United States.

Which animals will be included in the National Animal Identification System?

The system is being developed for all animals that will benefit from rapid tracing in the event of a disease outbreak. The NAIS currently includes plans for cattle, swine, sheep, goats, horses, poultry, llamas, alpacas, and domestic deer and elk.

What is the first step in implementing NAIS? What do I need to do?

The first step in developing a national system is to assign a unique number — a Premises ID Number (PIN) — to every location where animals are born, managed, marketed or exhibited. Livestock owners in Georgia need to apply to the Georgia Department of Agriculture for a Premises ID Number. There is no charge for this service.

How do I apply for a Premises ID Number?

Complete the form below.

Will my child need a PIN for his or her 4-H or FFA project?

Each primary location where animals reside needs a number. If more than one person has animals at that location, complete only one PIN application in the name of the person with primary authority.

Do I need a PIN for each pasture?

Usually not. A separate PIN would be required only in cases where animals are managed as separate herds or flocks in different locations.

Where can I get more information?

Visit the Web site at www.usda.gov/nais, or visit your county extension office.

How will NAIS help me?

The bottom line is protecting your animals. Recording animal movements from farms, markets, processing plants and other locations improves the ability to repond to disease outbreaks.
